Democrats Revolt: Senate Nominee on the Brink

Maine’s Democratic Senate nominee is facing a rape allegation from a woman he once dated — and now his own party is demanding he quit the race before a legal deadline runs out.

Story Snapshot

  • Jenny Racicot told CNN and Politico that Graham Platner raped her in 2021 while they were in a casual dating relationship — an allegation Platner flatly denies.
  • Racicot said she told him “Don’t touch me” and “I’m not into this,” but complied out of fear — stating on CNN: “Complying is not consenting.”
  • Major Democratic figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Ro Khanna, have called on Platner to drop out of the Maine Senate race.
  • Platner has until July 13, 2026, to withdraw under Maine state law — and his campaign claims the allegations were “coached and coordinated by out-of-state establishment operatives.”

What Racicot Says Happened

Jenny Racicot, a Maine woman who dated Graham Platner, told CNN anchor Jake Tapper on July 6, 2026, that Platner entered her home uninvited in 2021, was heavily intoxicated, and ignored her repeated refusals. She said she pushed him away with her legs and told him to stop multiple times. During the struggle, a sewing kit was knocked over and a needle stuck her in the leg. The next morning, she says Platner claimed he had no memory of what happened.

When Tapper asked Racicot directly whether what happened was rape, she answered: “By definition, yes, absolutely.” She also made clear that going along out of fear is not the same as agreeing. “Complying is not consenting,” she said. Politico reviewed text messages and emails that support her account — including an email she sent to her therapist in 2019 describing her relationship with Platner. An ex-boyfriend who dated Racicot after Platner also confirmed her account of the assault to Politico.

Party Leaders Call for Platner to Step Aside

The political fallout was swift. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Ro Khanna publicly called on Platner to withdraw from the race. Khanna posted on social media that the allegations were “very serious and credible” and that Platner “should drop out.” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also joined the growing list of Democrats demanding Platner step aside. Under Maine state law, Platner has until July 13, 2026, to formally withdraw and allow the party to replace him on the ballot.

Platner has not dropped out. In a video posted to social media, he called the allegations “troubling, serious, and false” and said he was “taking time to reflect on the best path forward.” His campaign claimed the allegations were timed strategically and pushed by outside political forces — but offered no specific evidence to back that up. His statement was notably vague and did not address the specific details Racicot described, such as the sewing kit or her repeated refusals.

A Pattern Voters on Both Sides Recognize

Research shows that Democrats tend to impose harsher consequences on candidates facing sexual assault allegations than Republicans do — regardless of the accused’s party. That pattern is playing out here. The same Democratic base that has criticized Republicans for standing by accused candidates is now facing a test of its own values, with a Senate seat on the line in a race that could affect the balance of power in Washington.

It’s also worth noting what the broader data tells us: about 60% of rapes are committed by someone the victim already knows, and most go unreported at the time. Racicot did not file a police report in 2021, citing fear of retaliation — a detail Platner’s supporters have pointed to as a weakness in her account. But experts say delayed reporting is common and does not, by itself, indicate a false claim. The question of what actually happened in 2021 remains unresolved in any legal sense. What is clear is that a candidate’s future — and a Senate race — now hangs in the balance.
