New Polling Indicates Support For Supreme Court Term Limits

The Supreme Court has been getting nationwide attention since it voted to remove Roe v. Wade last month. The choice to send abortion back to the states prompted mass outrage, with many protests taking place over the past few weeks.

Democrats, naturally, have increased their calls to expand the court. Some even suggested that conservative Supreme Court justices lied during their testimonies in claiming that Roe v. Wade was settled law.

Likewise, leftists are saying conservative Supreme Court justices should be impeached from the bench altogether. This comes on top of disruptive demonstrations these officials have faced outside their homes and in dining establishments.

However, while support for expanding the Supreme Court remains deeply partisan, there is considerable support for term limits on Supreme Court justices, per Washington Examiner.

A Deep Dive Into the Data

NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the Associated Press ran a poll that confirms 67% of Americans believe Supreme Court justices should only serve for a limited amount of time.

Interestingly enough, this view is shared by most Republicans (57%) and Democrats (82%). In this poll, Americans also expressed support for age limits on justices serving on the Supreme Court.

Overall, confidence in the Supreme Court has taken a hit since Roe v. Wade was removed. Today, 43% of Americans report little support in the court. This is notably higher than the Americans who felt this way even just 12 weeks ago.

Possible Changes to the Court?

At this time, it remains to be seen whether or not the Supreme Court is ever hit with term limits for its members. After all, this isn’t just something that can happen with the snap of a finger.

Meanwhile, opponents of the Supreme Court have simply been trying to get around various court rulings at the legislative level. For instance, Democrats are seeking to pass bills that would codify into law Roe v. Wade, gay marriage, access to contraception, etc.

Democrats also remain adamant that the court has been taken over by Christian fundamentalism and right-wing extremism.

With this view, the left likewise asserts that putting more justices on the Supreme Court is vital to “democracy” and, of course, diluting the present conservative majority.

Just within the past couple of weeks, multiple protests against the overturn of Roe v. Wade have taken place outside the Supreme Court. All things considered, Americans shouldn’t be shocked if future demonstrations of this nature materialize sooner rather than late.

What do you think about the new poll that shows bipartisan and majority support for term limits on the Supreme Court? Should justices be limited in the time they can serve or the ages in which they can be on the court? Please let us know your feedback in the comments area.
