In what seems like a move to embrace inefficiency, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) revealed Chicago has been selected as the host city for the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Chicago’s Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson advocated for the city and ultimately triumphed over competing bids from Atlanta and New York.
Chicago chosen for 26th major political nominating convention
The DNC announced in a press statement:
The Democratic National Committee is excited to confirm that Chicago will host the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center from August 19th to 22nd.
Returning to the Midwest, a key Democratic bastion, the DNC will draw on the strength of Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota – components of the “blue wall.”
They were instrumental in securing the 2020 victories of Biden and Harris, as well as the Democrats’ triumph in the 2022 midterm elections.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) says she's "euphoric" that Chicago was chosen to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention. She points to Illinois' proximity to key battleground states as one of the reasons it was selected.

Chicago’s convention bid garnered support from a broad array of Midwestern Democrats, reflecting the party’s diversity.
It’s also showcasing the powerful coalition that will work toward re-electing President Biden and Vice President Harris, along with other Democrats on the ballot.
Biden’s economic strategy to be showcased at the convention
The region will exhibit President Biden’s economic strategy, which focuses on revitalizing infrastructure, sparking a manufacturing surge, and generating well-paying, middle-class jobs.
Chicago already experienced the positive effects of Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including a $144 million allocation to revamp the four Illinois International Port Calumet River Bridges and billions in investments to broaden economic opportunities across the region.
“Choosing Chicago as the host for the 2024 Democratic National Convention is an excellent decision,” stated Biden.
“Democrats will convene to showcase our momentous progress, which includes building an economy that benefits the middle and lower classes, rather than the wealthy elite.”
“From igniting manufacturing boom and restoring our bridges and roads to creating over 12 million high-paying jobs, we have delivered great progress for many hardworking Americans.”
