Debates in the Republican Party as to who the 2024 nominee should be remain ongoing. Some folks argue that it should be former President Trump, who is expected to announce his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election later this week.
However, there are others who look at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and believe he should be the nominee during the next presidential election cycle.
Many DeSantis supporters are looking at the governor’s track record of flipping blue counties red during his reelection earlier this month. DeSantis has likewise shown a real possibility of winning over voters who would never back Trump in a general election.
Now, a brand new poll actually shows the Florida governor leading Trump in a GOP primary field, as reported by Hot Air.
More Momentum Behind DeSantis
A poll by Yahoo News/YouGov shows DeSantis with 42% support in the GOP primary from Republicans and voters who lean Republican. Within this same demographic, Trump comes in with just 35%.
DeSantis’ lead over Trump in this particular poll arrives as the Florida governor’s stock has risen significantly since cruising to reelection last week. DeSantis has not yet announced any plans to run for the White House in 2024; though he has not explicitly ruled it out either.

Right now, it appears as though the governor is keeping his powder dry and allowing his options to remain open. There is still plenty of time left before those who intend to run will need to start formally declaring their candidacies.
2024 Awaits
As speculations about the 2024 presidential election begin, some conservatives are suggesting that Trump should postpone any announcement about the race.
This is due to fears that Trump declaring himself as a 2024 presidential candidate ahead of the Georgia runoffs will energize voters to back Sen. Warnock over GOP challenger Herschel Walker.
Herschel Walker, who Trump endorsed immediately and encouraged to get in the race, is underperforming Brian Kemp by 9 and Brad Raffensperger by 10.

If Walker does not win the race in Georgia, then Republicans will only have 49 seats in the Senate, rather than 50. Despite this very real concern, Trump has shown zero indication that he plans to delay his announcement of a 2024 presidential run.
Between this and Trump lashing out against GOP governors in Virginia and Florida without provocation, some in the conservative movement have said Trump is putting his ego above all else.
Others believe the former president did great things while in office, but should now step aside to let the next generation lead the party. In the weeks and months ahead, Americans can expect to learn more about what’s coming in the 2024 presidential election.
