The Tyre Extinguishers, a radical international group based in the United Kingdom, have been slashing tires of parked Sports Utility Vehicles as an act of protest against global warming.
The group’s operations expanded to 18 countries, including cities in the United States, like New York City, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco.
Group Targets Gas-Guzzling SUVs with Tire Deflation, Environmental Messaging
The Tyre Extinguishers, upon deflating the tires of SUVs, tend to leave a pamphlet on the vehicles’ windshields. The message on the document is usually a pointed critique of the vehicle’s environmental footprint, beginning with “ATTENTION – your gas guzzler kills.”

The pamphlet elaborates on the detrimental effects of such large vehicles in urban spaces, explaining their contribution to climate change and air pollution. This is part of the group’s strategy to raise awareness and spur change toward more sustainable transportation options.
Their website provides instructions on how to quickly deflate the tires of parked cars and templates for the pamphlets used during these operations.
The group asserts that it aims to make it impossible to own a large polluting 4×4 vehicle in urban areas worldwide; group members say they are defending against climate change, air pollution, and unsafe drivers.
Tyre Extinguishers Claim Deflation of Thousands of SUV Tires
The Tyre Extinguishers is an autonomous movement with no leadership structure, allowing groups to act independently.
As a result of their movement, organizations with similar missions like Les Degonfleurs in France, The DundeeFlators in Scotland, and SUVVersive in Italy have been established.

So far, activists associated with the Tyre Extinguishers claim to have deflated the tires of more than 10,000 SUVs.
In a single night in November of the previous year, the group claims to have “disarmed” more than 900 SUVs in a coordinated effort across various cities in the U.S. and Europe.
Meanwhile, back in April this year, the Tyre Extinguishers also claimed accountability for deflating tires on dozens of luxury SUVs in Boston’s affluent neighborhood. According to the group, they targeted 43 vehicles in their effort to mitigate emissions contributing to climate change and air pollution.
In a statement, the Tyre Extinguishers deemed SUVs as an “unnecessary environmental atrocity,” particularly in city environments where sustainable transport options are available.
This incident follows a similar one last year in New York City, where the group claimed to have deflated tires on an estimated 40 vehicles.
