How One Leader CONSOLIDATED Control

When Kim Jong Un assumed power in North Korea 15 years ago, Western observers hoped his Swiss education might steer the isolated nation toward reform. Instead, the youngest son consolidated absolute power through ruthless purges and built a nuclear arsenal capable of striking the American mainland, transforming North Korea into a destabilizing regional threat.

The Making of a Dictator

Kim Jong Un was groomed for absolute authority from childhood. At age eight, he received full military uniform complete with rank insignias, with officers ordered to salute him as a superior. This early indoctrination shaped his obsession with power that would later define his rule. Go Myong-hyun, a research fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, told reporters that this natural instinct for power made him the chosen successor over older siblings, despite not being the obvious heir.

His years studying at a private school in Bern, Switzerland, alongside his older brother, fueled speculation about Western-style reforms. The future dictator’s love of basketball and later friendship with NBA star Dennis Rodman seemed to confirm these hopes. After completing military studies at Kim Il Sung Military University, he became heir in 2008 and took control following his father’s fatal heart attack in 2011.

Consolidation Through Violence

Kim moved swiftly to eliminate rivals. Within three to four years, he purged anyone influential enough to challenge his authority. His brutal consolidation shocked the world in February 2017 when he orchestrated the assassination of his own half-brother. This ruthlessness established the foundation for his military ambitions. By 2016, North Korea conducted nuclear weapons tests that demonstrated intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities, threatening most of mainland America and stoking fears of nuclear war in 2017.

The Threat to American Security

Ankit Panda, author of Kim Jong Un and the Bomb, explains that Kim calls his missile program his treasured sword, considering it absolutely essential to regime survival. The development of thermonuclear weapons and long-range missiles represents a direct threat to American citizens and undermines regional stability that has protected free nations for decades. Kim shows no signs of easing military development, prioritizing weapons over his people’s welfare. His regime remains the world’s most reclusive nation, with future intentions unknown. The challenge for American policymakers remains clear: containing a nuclear-armed dictator who values power above all else and views military strength as his only guarantee of survival.
